Generic Allegra (Fexofenadine)
Generic Allegra (Allegra D) is an antihistamine medicine used for the treatment
of allergies. It eliminates allergy symptoms with minimal side effects. It blocks
the effects of histamine - a biogenic amine, which causes vasodilation, bronchoconstriction,
smooth muscle activation, separation of endothelial cells (responsible for hives),
pain and itching. Allegra reduces the symptoms of sneezing, runny nose and irritation
of the eyes.
Allegra has also a form with added decongestant Pseudoephedrine, known as Allegra-D
(Allegra D 24 Hour).
What is Allegra D used for?
Pseudoephedrine shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages and treat sneezing,
cough, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching,
Allegra ingredients
The main substance in Allegra is Fexofenadine.
Fexofenadine hydrochloride is an antihistamine, H1-receptor antagonist. It
is used for the treatment of hayfever and similar allergy symptoms.
Similar allergy symptoms:
- runny or itchy nose,
- sneezing,
- itchy throat,
- watery, itchy or red eyes.
Forms of Allegra
- tablets,
- orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs),
- oral suspension (liquid).
Allegra (Allegra D) doses.
For seasonal allergies - 60 mg twice daily or 180 mg once daily (for adults
and children 12 years or older); 30 mg twice daily (children 6-11 years)
For chronic urticaria - 60 mg twice daily (adults and children 12 years or older);
30 mg twice daily (children 6-11 years).
Take Allegra only with water, without any another liquid.
Allegra (Allegra D) and pregnancy
Allegra (Allegra D) can't be used, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
Allegra for children
Tablets of Fexofenadine (Generic Allegra)- may be used to treat seasonal allergy
in children from 6 years old.
Fexofenadine oral suspension (liquid) - may be used in children from 2 years
old.
Allegra side effects
You may continue using Allegra if you have such side effects as:
- fast,
- pounding,
- uneven heartbeat;
- hallucinations;
- anxiety;
- increased blood pressure;
You have to stop taking Allegra if you feel:
- fever,
- chills,
- body aches,
- cough
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of your face, lips, tongue
Allegra and other drugs
Don't take Generic Allegra with:
- antacids
- erythromycin
- ketoconazole
- rifampin
There may other drugs, which interact with Allegra. Tell your doctor about
medicines you take now.
Also don't use Allegra with grapefruit, apple, or orange juice ! What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
