Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea anti-diabetic drug which stimulates insulin release from the pancreatic beta cells and reduces glucose output from the liver.

Usage

Glimepiride is used to treat:

• diabetes mellitus type 2

Drug interactions

Glimepiride may interact with such drugs, as:

• Beta blockers
• Chloramphenicol
• Cimetidine
• Clofibrate
• Coumarins
• Cyclosporine
• Fluconazole
• Hyperglycemia-producing agents
• Rifampin
• Salicylates
• Sulfonamides
• Tricyclic antidepressants

Glimepiride possible side effects

• headache
• anorexia,
• aplastic anemia,
• bone marrow suppression,
• cholestatic jaundice,
• constipation,
• diarrhea,
• diuretic effect,
• edema,
• epigastric fullness,
• hepatitis,
• hypoglycemia,
• nausea,
• photosensitivity,
• pruritus,
• vomiting
  

Glimepiride and pregnancy / lactation

Use during pregnancy with caution.

Do not use during breast-feeding.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
