Depression - is a mental disorder characterized by low mood and loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities. There are three specific chemicals that can affect a person's mood: serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Depression occur if some of these neurotransmitters works in the brain noneffectively.

Most antidepressants increase synaptic levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.

An antidepressant is a psychiatric medication used for the treatment of major depression. They increase neurotransmitter levels. But effects on mood appear to occur several days or weeks later. So usually they are taken over the course of weeks, months, or sometimes years.

There are several groups of antidepressants:

2. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
3. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
4. Noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants (NASSAs)
5. Norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitors (NRIs)
6. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)

Each of them has its own mechanism of action.
