Sulfasalazine is a sulfa drug, a derivative of Mesalazine which acts locally in the colon to decrease the inflammatory response and inhibits prostaglandin synthesis.

Usage

Sulfasalazine is used to treat:

• inflammatory bowel disease
• rheumatoid arthritis
• ulcerative colitis

Drug interactions

Sulfasalazine may interact with such drugs, as:

• Azathioprine, mercaptopurine, sulfasalazine
• Cyclosporine
• Digoxin
• Folic acid
• Hypoglycemics
• Methenamine
• Methotrexate
• NSAIDs and salicylates
• Thiazide diuretics
• Thiopental
• Uricosuric agents
• Warfarin

Sulfasalazine possible side effects

• headache
• photosensitivity
• nausea, vomiting,
• diarrhea
• gastric distress
• oligospermia
• urticaria/pruritus
• hemolytic anemia

Sulfasalazine and pregnancy / lactation

Use during pregnancy and breast-feeding with caution and only after you have visited your doctor.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
