Alendronic acid or alendronate sodium is a bisphosphonate drug which inhibits bone resorption leading to an indirect increase in bone mineral density.

Usage

Alendronate is used to treat:

• osteoporosis in postmenopausal females;
• osteoporosis in males;
• Paget's disease of the bone

Drug interactions

Alendronate may interact with such drugs, as:

• Aspirin
• Oral medications (especially those containing multivalent cations)
• Ranitidine

Alendronate possible side effects.

• hypocalcemia
• headache
• abdominal pain
• dyspepsia
• nausea
• diarrhea
• gastritis
• vomiting
• musculoskeletal pain
• muscle cramps

Alendronate and pregnancy / lactation

Use during pregnancy and breast-feeding with caution.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
