Loperamide is an opioid receptor agonist which acts directly on intestinal muscles and inhibits peristalsis. It reduces fecal volume, increases viscosity, and diminishes fluid and electrolyte loss.

Usage

Loperamide is used to treat:

• acute diarrhea
• chronic diarrhea
• to decrease the volume of ileostomy discharge

Drug interactions

Loperamide may interact with such drugs, as:

• CNS depressants,
• phenothiazines,
• tricyclic antidepressants

Loperamide possible side effects

• shock
• drowsiness,
• fatigue,
• sedation
• rash,
• abdominal cramping,
• dry mouth,
• nausea,
• paralytic ileus,
• vomiting

Loperamide and pregnancy / lactation

May be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
