Furosemide is a loop diuretic which inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride in kidneys and increases excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium.

Usage

Furosemide is used to treat:

• heart failure
• edema
• hepatic or renal disease
• hypertension

Drug interactions

Furosemide may interact with such drugs, as:

• ACE inhibitors
• Antidiabetics
• Antihypertensive agents
• Cephaloridine or cephalexin
• Digoxin
• Fibric acid derivatives
• NSAIDs
• Lithium
• Metformin
• Phenobarbital
• Sucralfate
• Thiazides

Furosemide possible side effects

• orthostatic hypotension,
• thrombophlebitis,
• vertigo,
• dizziness,
• headache,
• blurred vision,
• fever,
• erythema multiforme,
• purpura,
• photosensitivity,
• hyperglycemia,
• hyperuricemia, hypocalcemia, hypochloremia, hypokalemia,
• nausea, vomiting,
• anorexia,
• diarrhea,
• ischemia hepatitis
• rinary bladder spasm,
• weakness
  

Furosemide and pregnancy / lactation

Do not use during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
