Mefenamic acid 250/500mg

Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, which inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by decreasing the activity of the cyclooxygenase.The result of this inhibition is decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors and reduction of inflammatory process.

Usage

Mefenamic acid is used to treat:

• osteoarthritis,
• rheumatoid arthritis,
• dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps)
• fever and pain
• psoriatic arthritis
• gout
• ankylosing spondylitis
• tendinitis
• bursitis
  
  

Drug interactions.

Mefenamic acid may interact with such drugs, as:

• Angiotensin II antagonists
• Anticoagulants
• Antiplatelet drugs (ticlopidine, clopidogrel, aspirin, abciximab, dipyridamole, eptifibatide, tirofiban)
• Cholestyramine
• Corticosteroids
• Cyclosporine
• Lithium
• Loop diuretic's
• Methotrexate

Mefenamic acid possible side effects.

• Diarrhea
• Epigastric pain
• Headache
• Insomnia
• Skin rash
• Dyspepsia
• Bronchospasm
• Hypertension
  

   

Mefenamic acid and pregnancy / lactation.

Do not use during pregnancy (3rd trimester) and breast-feeding.

Mefenamic acid and children

Ibuprofen may be used in children aged 14 years.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
