What is Generic Singulair?
It is Montelukast in tablets or chewable tablets. Montelukast is a leukotriene
receptor antagonist, it blocks the action of leukotriene in the lungs and bronchial
tubes and reduces the bronchoconstriction and inflammation.
What is Singulair used for?
It prevents asthma attacks. It is not useful for the treatment of acute asthma
attacks. Singulair reduces asthma symptoms (coughing, wheezing, shortness of
breath, or chest tightness) and control asthma.
So, it is indicated for:
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in patients aged 12 months and
older.
- Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in patients aged
15 years and older.
Dosage.
Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older - one 10-mg tablet daily
children 12 months - 5 years - 4 mg oral granules packet daily
children 2 - 5 years - 4 mg chewable tablet daily
children 6 - 14 years - 5mg chewable tablet daily
Drug interactions.
Singulair may interact with:
- carbamazepine
- cerivastatin
- paclitaxel
- phenobarbital
- phenytoin
- repaglinide
- rifabutin
Singulair and pregnancy.
Singulair is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor
if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
Do not use Singulair without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding
a baby.
Singulair possible side effects.
- hives;
- difficulty breathing;
- swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
- skin rash,
- mood or behavior changes, anxiety, depression, or thoughts about suicide
or hurting yourself;
- tremors or shaking;
- worsening asthma symptoms.
What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
