Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic, which inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis at the chain elongation step in bacteria.

It is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics.

Usage.

Azithromycin is used to treat:

• middle ear infections,
• tonsillitis,
• throat infections,
• laryngitis,
• bronchitis,
• pneumonia,
• sinusiti,
• sexually transmitted infections
  

Drug interactions.

Azithromycin may interact with:

• tacrolimus,
• phenytoin,
• alfentanil,
• bromocriptine,
• carbamazepine,
• cyclosporine,
• digoxin,
• disopyramide,
• triazolam,
• antacids

Azithromycin possible side effects.

• diarrhea;
• abdominal pain;
• nausea, vomiting
